About Us

Eco-Scapes is a small custom landscape design firm serving the Lower Virginia Peninsula to include Williamsburg, specializing in residential design work since 1997.  Our designer, Helen Janele, is a Certified Landscape Designer with the Virginia Society of Landscape Designers and a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arborists.  She was trained as an artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and majored in Oriental Art History at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, completing a bachelor’s degree in education.  She earned a second bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from Christopher Newport University and has also served the community as a Master Gardener for York County since 1995.  To reinforce her professional skills as a designer, she gardens, experimenting with unusual plants to learn more about their attributes and reliability in our climate and soils and with new plant combinations to bring innovation and flexibility to the designs she creates for the company.

Everything we do is dedicated to the delivery of a quality product for our clients.  We strive for a collaborative relationship between designer and customer.  Special attention is paid to selection of plants suitable for their designated locations in the design, such as drought tolerant plants for dry or rooty sites, deer-resistant choices for areas with heavy deer traffic, or salt-tolerant plants  for areas receiving periodic tidal flooding.   The installation practices we follow are based on what scientific research has taught us about soils, water movement, plant health, and best plant establishment.  Our total quality management during the installation phase results in optimum plant growth post-installation and very low plant failure rates. The quality of our work not only delivers to our clients a beautiful, functional landscape true to its original spirit and vision in the year of its completion, but one that remains so in the many years ahead.
